Tennis has always been an integral part of Northwood Club. In fact, the founders of the club were playing tennis when they first discussed the dream from which Northwood was born.
The first tennis courts were built shortly after the club was founded and they were opened in time for the 1947 Fourth of July celebration. The original courts were built on the location where the existing tennis parking lot now stands. In the mid- 70s, a new era for Northwood tennis was established. Eight tennis courts were built up on the "hilltop," followed by the tennis shop shortly thereafter. In 1986 the construction of the indoor facility capped the tennis complex. Today, after several court surface changes, the Northwood Tennis complex has been described as one of the best settings for tennis that you will find anywhere, and one that Northwood is very proud to showcase.
Many fine players have come through the Northwood program, but by far the most recognized and accomplished is Bill Scanlon. Bill began playing tennis at Northwood at nine years of age, and before he finished his tennis career, he won two NCAA singles championships at Trinity University in 1975 and 1976. He won numerous titles on the professional tour, and in 1983 he was ranked as high as No. 9 in the world with wins against John McEnroe and just about everybody else in professional tennis.
His "golden set," where he won all 24 points in one set without dropping a single point, is a feat that is commemorated in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.
Today you may not necessarily find a world-class player everyday on one of Northwood's 16 courts, but you will find many youngsters, women, men and couples of all ages and abilities who love Northwood and who love to play the game of tennis.
